The Story of My Name
This week, we will be writing about our names!
Every name has a meaning or story behind it. Sometimes our families choose our names for
a special reason. Maybe you were named after someone, maybe your name has a cultural
meaning, or maybe it just sounded perfect! Even if your family doesn’t know the meaning,
you can research what your name means and think about what it means to your family now.
Think About:
Who chose your name and why?
Are you named after anyone?
Does your name have a meaning in another language or culture?
What does your name mean to your family now?
Do you have a nickname? How do you feel about it?
Do you think your name fits your personality?
Write your personal narrative essay:
Introduction – Introduce your name and why names are important.Body Paragraph 1 – Tell the story of how you got your name.
Body Paragraph 2 -- Explain the meaning of your name and what it means to your
family.
Body Paragraph – Describe how your name connects to who you are or your
culture.
Conclusion – Wrap up by explaining why your name is special to you.
Purpose:Write a personal story that helps your reader understand why your name is meaningful and
what it says about you!
Remember: Use complete sentences, describe with details, and make your story unique!
Additional Info
Genre Classification: Personal Narrative (with some informative elements)
Students are telling the story behind their name (a personal experience or family story).
They include real-life details, feelings, and reflections, not just facts.
They use narrative techniques like sequencing, description, and personal voice.
It’s not a full “informative essay” because the focus is on personal meaning and connection, not on teaching facts about names in general.
